Minister Paul Mashatile hands over film studio to community of Diepsloot, 26 Mar

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile to officially handover a film studio to the community of Diepsloot

The Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile takes pleasure in inviting members of the media to the handover of a state of the art film studio to the community of Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.

The state of the art studio is in partnership with Top Crew Home Brew Movies, a 100 percent black-owned holding company that prides itself in producing locally made movies. Be a Top Crew is an empowerment project initiated by Top Crew Home Brew Movies, in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture aimed at, amongst others, identifying new talent and facilitating participant experience through "at-work” training and mentoring. This allows members of the community to better use the studios to continue to tell their own stories.

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) has ploughed R1,5 million into the Top Crew Film training programme which will be hosted in three provinces. The DAC committed to three provinces as a start in 2013. Given this success though, the Department may commit to an additional three provinces. The project though, does require other partners. Local government has joined in the effort; the City of Johannesburg has donated the land on which the film studio is built in Diepsloot.

Support for this studio is in line with the DAC’s Mzansi Golden Economy Strategy which aims to promote arts and culture, foster skills development and create sustainable livelihoods. This training programme for communities will also contribute towards an increase in local content for use on community television stations.
