Appointment of the MEC for Public Works

On 10 August 2009 the dark cloud befell the people of Limpopo as we lost one of the outstanding cadres and leaders of our time, Comrade Pandelani ‘Sparks’ Ramagoma. This has lead to the occurrence of a vacancy in the provincial executive council as Comrade Sparks was the MEC for Public Works.

We have since appointed Comrade George Muthundinne Phadagi as the new MEC for Public Works in Limpopo. His appointment is with effect from today, 20 August 2009.

Comrade Phadagi is one of the comrades who fought alongside others of his generation to bring about freedom and democracy in South Africa. He participated and led the mass democratic movement in various capacities. Whilst underground, the 1980s saw him play a major role in leading the United Democratic Front and the Northern Transvaal Action Committee amongst others.

After the endorsement of the liberation movements by the former Apartheid regime, he played a pivotal role in the re-establishment and the re-launching of the ANC structures in the country, far-north region in particular. He was the chairperson of the ANC in the far-north region, the present day Vhembe. He also served in the provincial executive committee of the ANC in Limpopo.

Since the 27 April democratic breakthrough, the ANC assigned him various responsibilities. He was the mayor (chair of Transitional Local Council) of Thulamela local municipality from 1995 to 2000. From 2001 to 2009 he served the people of South Africa as the Member of Parliament based in Cape Town.

We are confident that in comrade Phadagi we have identified a cadre and a leader who has what it takes to equal the challenge of our day and time. We are looking forward to his immense contribution to our core mandate of building a better life for the people of our province.

We would also like to take this opportunity to wish him well in his new assignment.
