Members of the media are invited to apply for accreditation to the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Conference of African Ministers to be held in South Africa from 6-7 September 2012 at the ICC in Durban. The Conference will be preceded by a gathering of CRVS experts on 3-5 September 2012. The Conference is hosted by the Department of Home Affairs and the President is expected to address the Conference.
It is the 2nd Conference of African Ministers responsible for CRVS to tackle the challenges caused by the absence of reliable data for births, deaths, marriage and divorce on the continent. Except for Seychelles and Mauritius, African countries have not reached the level of international standard of completion of CRVS, a status which had led to a phenomenon known as the “Scandal of Invisibility”. It refers to a state in which some people are born and die without leaving a trace in any legal record or official statistic, therefore, rendering them unseen and uncountable.
More information about the Conference is available on the website: http://new.uneca.org/crmc/crmc2012.aspx
