Another unsafe school in Mafikeng closed down

Another school in the North West province is again closed down. This came after labour inspectors were tipped about the learners who endures learning in class rooms that has either no lights or windows.

Educators were found to be teaching three grades in one class room whilst other rooms had beds and piles of rubbish. The school also has two toilets to service 120 learners plus educators.

Commenting on the hazardous conditions at the school, the Provincial Communicator, Orpa Mathabe said that the situation of the school is so serious that it does not even have a proper entrance and learners have to use the liquor store entrance to go in and out of the premises.

The school was declared a health hazard and found to have been contravening section 3.1 of the environmental regulation and that is why the inspectors issued a prohibition notice according to Mathabe.

"The prohibition notice will be revoked only if the identified anomalies have been addressed, and this should be the point at which the situation is considered fit for learning to take place by the inspectors," she said.

The Department of Labour would like to take this opportunity to applaud members of the media for alerting them about the school and makes an appeal to every member of the community to alert them when they suspect that labour laws are being flawed.
