On 20 December, Anton Bredell, Minister of Local Government, concluded the signing of Outcome nine with all the executive mayors in the Western Cape province. Outcome nine is one of the 12 outcomes agreed on by national government as the key focus of work between now and 2014. This outcome focuses on responsive, accountable, effective and efficient local government system.
Earlier this year, President Jacob Zuma signed performance agreements with all the national ministers, who in turn signed agreements with the provincial MECs. Minister Bredell was requested by the National Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to sign delivery agreements with all the Executive Mayors in the province.
Seven tangible outputs have been identified for outcome nine. These include improving access to basic services and the building of administrative and financial capacity in municipalities.
"While it is of the utmost importance that we have the commitment from the mayors to this agreement," said Minister Bredell, "the real test is how these role players go about delivering an excellent service to the people they are elected to serve."
"I will continue to support the mayors and their councils in making this pledge a tangible reality for the people of the Western Cape."
