Address by Western Cape MEC for Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Sakkie Jenner, at the launch of a mobile screen, Greenmarket Square, Cape Town

Good afternoon, goeiemiddag, molweni

As we look up at the countdown clock above our heads, as we see the minutes ticking away to the world's biggest soccer event, we are once again reminded that the 2010 World Cup tournament is here.

With less than two days to go, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has acquired a mobile light-emitting diode (LED) screen, which will be used at one of the FanJols to be hosted by the department.

It is clear that Capetonians, indeed young and old alike, are excited to join the masses as the world descends upon South Africa, which will play host to this mammoth event.

We are proud as the department, that by purchasing this screen, we can bring the world cup to the people and get all sectors of our society to touch the world cup.

We want to ensure that the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup is not just a Cape Town event, but that our people from across the Western Cape, including our rural areas get to experience what this world cup has to offer.

This screen in particular, will be housed at Worcester's Boland Park Sport Ground for the duration of the world cup. Boland Park will be one of five FanJols hosted by the department, outside of the Cape Town central business district.

Beyond 2010, this screen will be used for the promotion and marketing of the department's projects and events.

Ladies and gentlemen, we need to remember, the lasting legacy of 2010 is not only about now, it is also about what can be left for our youth beyond 2010, which could help in further improving their quality of life.

I thank you.
