Mr Zweledinga Pallo Jordan served as a Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of South Africa from 1996 to 1999; as a Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and Broadcasting from 1996 until 1996 and Minister of Arts and Culture from 29 April 2004 to 10 May 2009.

 

Academic Qualifications

Mr Jordan studied at the University of Wisconsin in the United States of America (USA) in 1962 and he acquired a post-graduate degree from the London School of Economics.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Mr Jordan was a member of the research unit of the African National Congress (ANC) in its Department of Information and Publicity in 1975 and he was appointed head of Radio Freedom in 1977 and as a director of the ANC's first internal mass propaganda campaign, "The Year of the Spear", marking the centenary of the Battle of the Isandhlwana of 1879 in 1979.

He served as head of the ANC's research unit of the Departent of Information and Publicity in 1980; and he was elected to the National Executive Committee (NEC) in 1985. He had also served as administrative secretary of the NEC Secretariat from 1985 until 1988 and he served on the NEC's Strategy and Tactics Committee as convenor from 1985 to 1989.

Mr Jordan was Director of Information and Publicity in 1989 and served on the NEC's sub-committee on negotiations and the NEC's sub-committee on Constitutional Guidelines.

He returned to South Africa after the unbanning of the ANC in 1990 and became member of Parliament in the National Assembly in 1994 and served as Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Portfolio Committee from 2002 until 2004.

He has been a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) of African National Congress (ANC) since December 2007.
