Ms Lucas was the Premier of the Northern Cape Province from 19 April 2013 to 22 May 2019.

  • Ms Lucan was an ANC PEC and PWC member between (2004-2012).
  • She was Deputy Provincial chairperson of the ANC Women's League in 2008, and ANC Women's League acting provincial secretary serving on the Women's League NEC -ex Officio capacity (2006-2008).
  • She was an ANC Women's League PEC and PWC Member between 2000-2007.
  • She became the First Regional Chairperson of the merged Upington and part of Kuruman Region, known as Siyanda region from 2000 until 2004.
  • She was ANC REC and RWC Member at the Upington Region in 1996-2000.
  • Ms Lucas was ANC Women's League- Regional Chairperson at the Upington region in 1998-2000.
  • She was ANC Women's League- Regional Secretary at the Upington region in 1996 until 1998.
  • She was an ANC and ANC Women's League REC member as the Upington region in 1994-1996.

As ANC leader in the branch formed part of the delegations to the Transitional Council to ensure communities get prepaid electricity when they could not afford conventional electrical power.

As a community Activist, she was part of leading the rent boycotts in Rosedale community in Upington (1983-1995).

She became involved in political activities in 1980 whilst schooling at Carlton van Heerden high school in Upington.

She Served on the following committees in the Provincial Legislature: Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs; Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Social Development.

She was a member of the following portfolio committees: Agriculture; Transport, Road and Public Works; Housing and Local Government; Safety and Liaison; and Education; Standing Committee Chairperson for Constitutional Affairs; Gender; Internal Arrangements; Rules; Public Accounts and Women's Caucus.

  • Ms Lucas accompanied former ANC Secretary General and other provincial secretaries of the ANC, ANC Women's and Youth League on a party-to-party visit to Cuba.
  • She attended South Africa Development Community Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (SADCOPAC) Conference in Zanzibar in 2005.
  • She attended a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Workshop in Swaziland in 2004.
  • She also attended CPA workshop in Malawi in 2003.
  • She was part of the study tour to People's Republic of China in 2003.She was part of the study tour to United Kingdom, Canada and United States in 2001.

She was a Public Servant at the Department of Social Development from 1983 until 1999. She was then an ANC PR Councilor at the Upington Municipality between 1995-1999. She became a Community Development Worker k Khara Hais Municipality SAMWU Shopsteward and Chairperson of Upington Local in 1999-2000. She was a member of the Provincial legislature from 2000 until 2004.She was elected as EXCO member of the Association of Piblic Accounts Committees in 2002-2004,a member of the Provincial legislature, serving as ANC Whip (2004-2009).

Ms Lucas was elected as Deputy General Sectretary of Association of Public Accounts Committes in 2004-2006.She was elected as General Secretary of Association of Public Accounts Committees (2006-2009) and a Date Member of EXCO -Environment and Nature Conversation in 2009.

She acted as Premier from 28 November-5 December 2010.
