General Simphiwe Nyanda was a Minister of Communications of the Republic of South Africa from 11 May 2009 until 2010. Prior to his appointment as a minister, he served as a Chief of Defence Force Staff of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) from 1994 until 1997 and as a General Officer commanding Gauteng Command in 1997. He also served as a Deputy Chief of the SANDF from 1997 to 1998 and as Chief of the SANDF from 1998 until 2005.

 

Academic Qualifications

Gen Nyanda holds a MSc degree in Financial Management from University of London; Bachelor of Arts degree from University of South Africa (UNISA) and a Post-graduate Diploma in Economic Principles from University of London. He also attended training Civil Service Programme at Civil Service College in UK; attended Infantry Platoon Commander's Course in German Democratic Republic; attended 60mm Artillery course in German Democratic Republic; attended Abridged Brigade Commander's course in Moscow, Soviet Union and completed an Intelligence Course in German Democratic Republic. He further attended Senior Command and Staff Duties Course at South African Defence College and Joint Staff Course at South African Defence College. He Matriculated at Orlando High Schoolm in Soweto in 1969.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Gen Nyanda was a Recruiting Officer of the African National Congress (ANC) underground from 1974 to 1976. He was Commander of Trainees and Training Platoon in 1976; Commander Transvaal Urban Machinery from 1979 to 1983; and Chief of Staff Transvaal Command (Eastern Command) from 1983 to 1986. He was appointed Chief of Staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) for the period 1992 to 1994; and a Co-Chairman of the Joint Military Co-ordinating Committee of the Transitional Executive Council in 1994. He was also a Commander Border Operations, Swaziland 1986; and a Deputy Head of the Political Military underground leadership in South Africa from 1988 until 1990. He was arrested for five months July to November 1990 and he was elected to National Executive Committee of the ANC 1991 to 1994, and from December 2007. Member of the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee since 1991. Board Member of the Public Investment Corporation, the Audit and Risk and Investment Committees.
