Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka served as a Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa from 22 June 2005 to 2008. Prior to her appointment, she served as a Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry (DTI) of the Republic of South Africa from 1996 to 1999; Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology from 3 February to 30 April 2004; Minister of Minerals and Energy of the Republic of South Africa from 17 June 1999 to 21 June 2005. She became a Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Public Service and Administration Portfolio Committee in 1994

Academic Qualifications

Ms Mlambo-Ngcuka holds a Master's of Philosophy degree in Educational Planning and Policy 2003; a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science and Education from National University of Lesotho (NUL) 1980 and studied Gender Policy and Planning Development at Planning Unit of the University College of London in 1988.

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Ms Mlambo-Ngcuka Lectured at the Impumalanga Teachers Training College, from 1980 to 1981; and taught at Ohlange High School in KwaZulu-Natal from 1981 to 1983. She also served as a Coordinator for Young Women Christian Association (YWCA), World office in Geneva working on global youth development issues from 1984 until 1989 and as a Director of the TEAM of a Development Organisations in Cape Town from 1987 until 1989.

She worked as a Director of World University Services - a funding agency from 1990 until 1992 and she was a founder and Managing Director of Phumelela Services, a Management Consulting Company in 1993 and she was a founder member of the Guguletu Community Development Corporation (GCDC). She became a member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress in 1997 and she served as a Board member of World Development Foundation. She became a

Chancellor of Tshwane University of Technology on 2 November 2007.
