Mr Mosiuoa Gerard Patrick Lekota was Minister of Defence of the Republic of South Africa from 17 June 1999 until 25 September 2008. Prior to his appointment as minister, he served as the first Premier of the Free State Provincial government from 1994 until 1996 and as Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces from February 1997 until June 1999.

 

Academic Qualifications

Mr Lekota attended Secondary education at Mariazel, Matatiele up to Standard 8 and Matriculated at St Francis College in Marianhill in 1969. Thereafter he enrolled for a Social Science degree at University of the North, but was expelled due to Student Representative Council (SRC) and South African Student's Organisation (SASO) activities 1972.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Mr Lekota joined and became permanent Organiser for SASO from 1974 to 1975 and he was instrumental in organising victory celebrations when Mozambique won its freedom from Portugues colonial rule in 1974. He was imprisoned at Robben Island Prison for conspiring to commit acts endangering the maintenance of law and order and he was in prison from 1974 until 1982.

 

He was the founder member of United Democratic Front (UDF) and he was elected as a Publicity Secretary for the UDF in 1983. He was detained and sentenced in the Delmas trial 1985 and he was released after the Appeal Court reviewed the sentence in 1989.

He was a Convenor of the African National Congress (ANC) in Southern Natal in 1990 and he was elected to the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and its National Working Committee (NWC). He served as Chief of Intelligence in 1991 and he was elected Secretary for ANC Election Commission in 1992 and became a National Chairperson of the ANC from December 1997 until December 2007.

Mr Lekota is the Author of 'Prison Letters to my Daughter' and he Contributed to the publication of the book titled, '30 years of the Freedom Charter' 1985.
