Mr Membathisi Mphumzi Shepherd Mdladlana was the Minister of Labour of the Republic of South Africa from July 1998 to 2009. While in Parliament Mr Mdladlana served as a Chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly Committee (Theme Committee Four) from 1994 to 1996; as a member of the Home Affairs Portfolio Committee from 1994 to 1998; and Whip of the Parliamentary Programming Committee from 1995 to 1998.

He also served as a Deputy Chairperson of the Parliamentary Scout Union of South Africa from 1996 and as a Member of the National Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Education from 1994 to 1998.

 

Academic Qualifications

Mr Mdladlana attended a Primary Teachers Course at Lovedale in Alice between 1970 to 1971; a a Primary Teachers' Diploma at Goodhope College in Cape Town between 1991 and 1993 and a BA degree Majoring in Education and Xhosa from University of South Africa (Unisa) in 1997.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Teacher at Vukukhanye Primary School, Gugulethu, Cape Town from 1972 to 1981 and he Assisted the Area Commissioner of the Boy's Scout Association of South Africa with training from 1977 to 1982 and he became a Regional Organiser of the South Western African Teachers Association (SWATA) that later became Peninsula African Teachers Association (PENATA) between the period 1980 until 1983.

He also served as a Deputy Secretary of Cape African Teachers Union (CATU) between 1984 and 1985; He worked as a Principal of Andile Primary School at New Crossroads in Cape Town from 1982 to 1994. He was a founding member and Chairperson of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) from between 1985 and 1990; and a founding member and first president of South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) from 1990 to 1994.

Mr Mdladlana was elected Vice-Chairperson of the Dorothy Zihlangu Branch of the African National Congress (ANC) in Gugulethu and he served from 1990 until 1992; a Chairperson of the Peninsula Region of the ANC in 1998.

He also servrd as a Western Cape Secretary of African Group Division; a Disctrict Commissioner and as Elder and Session Clerk of the Gugulethu Presbyterian Church from 1980.
