Mr Mandisi Bongani Mabuto Mpahlwa was a Minister of Trade and Industry of the Republic of South Africa from 29 April 2004 until 10 May 2009. He had served as a member of Parliament from 27 April 1994 until 10 May 2009. as a Chairperson of the Portfolio Committe on Finance, National Assembly 1997 to 1999; Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of South Africa from 17 June 1999 to 28 April 2004.

 

Academic Qualifications

Mr Mpahlwa holds a Master of Science degree in Financial Economics from the University of London 2001. Between 1980 and 1983 he studied a Diploma in Electrical Engineering - Heavy Current from Mangosuthu Technikon in Durban, (incomplete) and from 1995 to 1996 he obtained a Diploma in Economic Principles from the University of London and he did Macro-economics course, at the American University in January 1995 and Macro-economics course, at the National Institute of Economic Policy in 1996. He also did an Economic Leadership course at Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania in United States of America. Mr Mpahlwa attended Junior Secondary education at Bethel Seventh Day Adventist College in Butterworth and Transkei and Senior Secondary education at Umtata Technical College where he also did NTC I and II in Electrical Technology between 1977 and 1978 and at Umlazi Technical College where he did his NTC III in Electrical Technology in 1979.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Mr Mpahlwa worked for Norton Abrasives in Isando, Kempton Park, while studying between 1981 and 1982; he also worked in the family business in Umtata from July 1983 to December 1984; for the Umtata Municipality Electrical Engineering section, as a Trainee Electrical Engineering Technician and forced to leave the job in November 1985 for political reasons. He went into exile in November 1985 and while in exile he worked for the ANC and also in South Africa from November 1985 to April 1993. He involved in the Convention for a Democratic South Africa      and multi-party negotiations (CODESA) from 1991 to 1993. He served as a Regional Elections Co-ordinator for the Transkei Region from April 1993 to April 1994 and he became a member of Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in the Eastern Cape in 1998 and served until 2004. He was also a member of Regional Executive Committee (REC) of the ANC in Transkei from 1991 to 1994. Mr Mpahlwa also served as a member REC of the ANC in Umtata from 1994 to 1998; a member of the African National Congress (ANC) from June 1999 and he is former Ex-officio National Executive Committee (NEC) between 1999 and 2007.
