Ms Loretta Jacobus was Deputy Minister of Correctional Services of the Republic of South Africa from 2 February 2006 until 2009.

Ms Jacobus obtained Diploma in Social Welfare.

 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Ms Jacobus was a Member of Gauteng Legislature from 1994 to 1999 and Permanent delegate of the Gauteng Legislature in the National Council of Provinces from 1999 to 2004. She was also Chairperson of the Select Committee on Social Services and served in the Select Committee on Education and Recreation, the sub-committee on delegated Legislation and Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence.

She was a Member of National Assembly from 2004; Chairperson of the Portfolio Commmittee on Arts and the Culture; Member of Portfolio Committee on Foreign Affairs and Sub-Committee on International Relations and Member of National Council of Provinces from 1999 until 2004.

She joined structures affiliated to the United Democratic Front (UDF); South African Youth Congress - Riverlea branch in 1986; where she served as Chairperson of Riverlea branch of Transvaal Women Federation in 1986.

She taught at Eldorado Park and Riverlea for three years from 1987 to 1989 and she was Co-ordinator of Riverlea Resource Centre from 1989 until 1991. She was also involved in Staff Development and Training at NUMSA head Office from 1991 to 1993.

Later in 1993 she joined the Kempton Park negotiation process representing South African Communist Party (SACP); and she served as provincial Treasurer of the SACP Gauteng from 1991 until 1994 and she was elected first Chairperson of the SACP for Johannesburg West Branch after its unbanning.
