Dr Mimmy Gondwe was appointed as Deputy Minister of Higher Education from 3 July 2024.

She has been a Member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance since 2019 and has served in numerous parliamentary committees, including the portfolio committees on Public Enterprises, Public Service and Administration, and State Security. In addition to serving on these committees, she has also served on the Joint Ethics Committee of Parliament and the Joint Constitutional Review Committee of Parliament.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Philosophy degree from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Laws degree from Rhodes University, and a Master and Doctor of Laws in Mercantile Law degrees, both from the University of Stellenbosch. While studying towards her PhD at the University of Stellenbosch, Dr Gondwe was awarded a number of scholarships and grants in recognition of her academic achievements, including the Fulbright Scholarship, Andrew Mellon Foundation Scholarship and Baden Wuttermberg Scholarship. 

She has a rich professional background in the legal, academic and political spheres. Her career includes holding positions as a Content Advisor and Researcher at the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa and Junior Lecturer/Research Assistant at the University of Stellenbosch.

Dr Gondwe’s leadership and dedication to public service have been evident in her various roles, including that of mentoring young leaders and driving crucial national issues while still serving in the portfolio committees of Public Service and Administration and Public Enterprises.
