Mr Fholisani Sydney Mufamadi was Minister of Provincial and Local Government of the Republic of South Africa from 17 June 1999 until 25 september 2008. Prior to his appointment as minister of Provincial and Local government, he served as Minister of Safety and Security of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 until 16 June 1999.

Mr Mufamadi holds Master of Science degree in State, Society and Development from the University of London. He isc Currently a Doctoral candidate at the University of London specializing in Political Economy of Automotive Manufacturing.

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

Mr Mufamadi was a member of the Zoutpansberg Students' Organisation while at school. He was private teacher at Lamula Secondary School in Meadowlands in Soweto in 1980. He became a member of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and he left school and worked at a firm of Attorneys as a messenger. He joined the General and Allied Workers' Union for whom he later worked as a volunteer and he became a General Secretary of the General and Allied Workers Union in 1982 and he was re-elected in 1984. He became Transvaal Publicity Secretary of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and he helped organise the launch of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in 1985. He was elected General Secretary of Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU) at Inauguration Rally on 29 December 1985. Mr Mufamadi was a founder member of COSATU in 1985 and he was named as one of the South African Communist Party (SACP) 22-person Interim Leadership Group on 29 July 1990 and he represented the African National Congress (ANC) at Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) - Working Group 4. He was a member of National Peace Committee and played an important role in the drafting of the National Peace Accord of 14 September 1991. He also represented the ANC at the Transitional Executive Councils (TECs) Sub-Council on Law and Order, Safety and Stability between 1993 and 1994 and he was a member of the Central Committee of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and he served member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ANC.
