Current Positions

Mr Buti Manamela is the Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training of the Republic of South Africa; a position he was appointed to on 17 October 2017.

He has been an African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament in the National Assembly since 2009.

Mr Manamela is National Secretary of the Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA), and a member of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
 

Academic Qualifications

Mr Manamela completed an Electronic Engineering Honours Programme in Public Administration in 2008; he attended various Labour Courses with DHS ELA from 2002 to 2003; obtained a National Certificate, N5 between 1998 and 2001); and a National Senior Certificate in 1997.
 

Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities

From 1994 to 1996, Mr Manamela was branch secretary of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL); and in 1995, he was also branch coordinator for the Congress of South African Students.

In 2001, he was deputy president of the South African Students Congress; and from 2001 to 2003, he was local organiser for the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union.

Manamela has led the YCLSA since its launch in 2003. He was re-elected to the position of national secretary for a third term in December 2010. In addition, he serves on the politburo of the SACP, the party's highest decision-making body.

Manamela is a member of the ANC's strategy committee in Parliament, which is responsible for the strategic planning of the ruling party's work in the National Assembly.

He was appointed a whip of Parliament's committee on labour and he is a member of the Parliamentary committees on communications and on economic development.

Mr Manamela has been a contributor to 'The Bottom Line' from 2004 to date.

Mr Buti Manamela was the Deputy Minister in The Presidency from 26 May 2014 to 16 October 2017.
