Positions last held in government
Ms Barbara Hogan served as Minister of Public Enterprises of the Republic of South Africa From 11 May 2009 to 31 October 2010 and as Minister of Health of the Republic of South Africa from 26 September 2008 until 10 May 2009. She became member of Parliament in 1994 and served as Chairperson of Standing Committee on Auditor General; as Chairperson of the portfolio committee on Finance from 1999 to 2004; and as Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Account (SCOPA).
Academic Qualifications
Ms Hogan obtained qualifications in Accounting and Economics and she enrolled for Development Studies at University of Witwaterrand. She completed matric at St Dominics Convent School.
Career/Positions/Memberships/Other Activities
Ms Hogan joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1977 after the Soweto Uprising. She was the first woman in South Africa to be found guilty of treason in 1982 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment at Pretoria Central Prison and was released in 1990.
She played a very significant role in mobilising white leftists as well as public campaigning and supplying crucial information to the ANC underground on Trade Unions and Community activities in South Africa. She rose through the structures of the anti-apartheid movement in the country and she played a big role in the creation of the African National Congress (ANC) structures in Gauteng.
She was a member of National Congress (ANC) structures in Gauteng and was elected Secretary-General of the ANC PWV Region now Gauteng and she became a member of Amandla AIDS Fund established in 2003.
Ms Hogan was passionate about improving the Socio-economic conditions of the black majority and supported the idea of a free democratic and multi-racial society in South Africa.
She was on forefront of organising Consumer boycotts which resulted in her being arrested, detained and charged with high treason during the period 1981 to 1983. She became a member of ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) for the period 1990 until 1992. She was involved in the CODESA talks that ultimately gave birth to a democratic South Africa.
As member of Parliament Ms Hogan played a leading role in many ad hoc committees and investigations.
She also served as head of Policy Development at the then Development Bank of South Africa in 1993 and was Part of the Team that formed the country's future Public Work Programme, an intervention that continued to form a critical aspect of government Programme of Action.
