The Portfolio Committee wants the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to brief it about the investigation into a CCTV footage incident showing a police man allegedly shooting and murdering a suspect in Gauteng two weeks ago. The briefing is scheduled for this Wednesday in Parliament.
“We want a full briefing with regard to the investigation. Any illegal and extra-judicial conduct by errant police should be condemned in the strongest terms,” says Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman.
Mr Beukman says South Africa is a constitutional state, and any alleged extra-judicial killing is a blot on the record of the values the country stand for and as such Gauteng Police management needs to act decisively and with speed in dealing with this matter.
According to the Committee Chairperson, this incident again brings the issues of command and control by station commanders, training, ethos and code of conduct by police officers to the fore, issues the Committee has singled out as critical for police reform in last week’s meeting.
