More than 90% of Water Tanks Allocated to N Cape Installed
The latest report of the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in the Northern Cape on the distribution and installation of water tanks indicates that out of the 884 water tanks delivered, 699 are permanently installed, 830 in use and 131 are temporarily installed and under construction.
The acting Provincial Head of the Department of Water and Sanitation in the Northern Cape Mr Kobus Streuders says he is satisfied with the number of water tanks installed and in use providing thousands of residents of the province with access to water. “However the Department is concerned with vandalism and theft of temporary or fully installed tanks, especially the daily theft of taps, making it difficult to daily fill the tanks with water”. He further said that “lack of ownership by the community for water infrastructure that provides them with much needed water is baffling”.
Frances Baard District (FBD) Municipality received 256 water tanks and have permanently installed 220. Sol Plaatje is the only municipality in the Frances Baard District to successfully install all the 105 water tanks allocated to it. Currently only 23 trucks are in use in FBD after 10 water trucks were withdrawn.
Pixley ka Seme received 95 water tanks and have 83 water tanks in use and have permanently installed 73.
John Taolo Gaetsewe received 356 water tanks, of which 333 are in use and 244 permanently installed. Gasegonyana is the only municipality that has successfully installed all the 82 tanks allocated to in it in the JTG.
Namakwa District Municipality received 36 water tanks out of the allocated 44 and have managed to successfully install all. All the allocated 5 water trucks filling the tanks are also in use.
Of the 142 water tanks allocated to ZF Mgcawu District Municipality, 137 are in use and 126 permanently installed.
The latest report on the delivery of the intervention in the Northern Cape is happening satisfactorily and it is hoped that it will be completed sooner rather than later.
