Statement following an incident at Engen Refinery
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy will urgently conduct an assessment of petroleum products supply in the country. This follows an incident that occurred at the Engen Oil Refinery in Wentworth, Durban. The existing import infrastructure will be used to supplement petroleum products supply.
The department is relieved that none of the workers were seriously injured. We further recognise that the incident has caused anxiety in the surrounding communities, as would be expected.
In line with the provisions of the occupational health and safety act, the relevant government structures are on the scene to conduct investigations on the cause of the incident.
