Employment and Labour condemns circulation of unfounded speculation surrounding the death of an employee

The Department of Employment and Labour strongly condemns the speculation that is being circulated on the social media with regard to the passing of one of its officials from the Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal office.

“We are extremely shocked at the callousness and utter disrespect to the grieving family as a result of these baseless rumours. Not only is this hurtful to the family, the speculation also contravenes the National Disaster Management Act and its regulations by peddling unverified and possibly false rumours. The Department remains in contact with the family,” said Department of Employment and Labour Director-General Thobile Lamati.

Lamati has also indicated that the department will commission an investigation into the origin of the false story and will report the matter to the police for further investigation and possible criminal charges against those involved.

The official passed away at her home on Saturday April 25 and as expected of a caring employer, the department has, through the Provincial Operations management, met the family to convey its condolences.
