Limpopo province receives 440 water tanks and 34 water tankers (trucks) in various Municipalities
In an effort to ensure that rural communities have access to water, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mr David Mahlobo has handed over water tanks to the communities of Sekhwama and Sefene in Molemole Local Municipality on Monday, 20 April 2020.
This is in response to a directive from Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu to ensure that all communities have access to water so that they can wash their hands regularly with a soap to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
To date, a total of 440 water tanks and 34 water tankers have been delivered to various communities in Limpopo province.
Vhembe District Municipalities received 132 water tanks. Other District Municipalities that received water tanks are: Capricorn (53, including 60 in Polokwane Municipality); Mopani (53); Sekhukhune (80); Lephalale (17); Mogalakwena (16); Modimolle (16) and Bela Bela (13).
To supplement these water tanks, the Department of Water and Sanitation has also delivered 34 water tankers (trucks) to remote communities through its entity, Lepelle Northern Water. The tankers were delivered to Vhembe, Sekhukhune, Bela-Bela, Polokwane, Moponi, Polokwane, Lephalale, Mogalakwena, Thabazimbi and Mokgopong/Modimolle.
Deputy Minster Mahlobo urged community members not to vandalise what has been provided to them as it is their water infrastructure that they need to guard at all times.
“As a country we are battling with the cancer of vandalism of water infrastructure which is a threat to our resolve to provide uninterrupted water supply to communities. As community members we also need to take some responsibility as this vandalism affects us directly, it is not correct to think this is a government thing, this is your infrastructure”, he emphasised.
