KwaZulu-Natal on audit outcomes

Auditor-General praises KwaZulu-Natal on audit outcomes

29 March 2009

Auditor-General (AG), Terence Nombembe, has praised KwaZulu-Natal Premier
Sibusiso Ndebele, the provincial government as well as Mayors in KwaZulu-Natal
for their commitment towards ensuring effective and efficient financial
management of the various government departments in the province.

Nombembe briefed the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Co-ordinating Forum (PCF),
chaired by Premier Ndebele and which all KwaZulu-Natal Mayors are part of, on
the municipal audit outcomes and trends for the 2007/08 financial year at the
Imperial Hotel in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 27 March 2009. The AG focussed on
the analysis of the financial management status of municipalities in the
province.

“KwaZulu-Natal is the only province in South Africa which has in excess of
45 municipalities, the province has 61 municipalities. The municipal audit
outcomes and trends for the 2007/08 financial year is one of the best in South
Africa. This is a very good success story of which KwaZulu-Natal must be
extremely proud of. The national average percentage for audit completion is
75percent, but KwaZulu-Natal achieved 98percent,” said Nombembe.

Nombembe said KwaZulu-Natal also faired well in terms of the audit outcomes
and trends for provincial government departments for the 2007/08 financial
year, when compared to the other provinces in South Africa.

The purpose of the AG’s analysis, a comprehensive assessment of the state of
financial and performance information of local governments, is to provide an
overview of the audit outcomes at municipal level. According to the analysis,
of the 61 municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, 60 audit reports (98 percent) have
been finalised.

An elated Premier Ndebele said that these audit outcomes and trends was a
validation of our pursuit of excellence and has added to the achievements of
the provincial government since 2004.

"We are extremely proud of these audit outcomes and trends. This gives us
renewed energy to continue in the pursuit of more excellence. These audit
outcomes and trends are a result of a team effort by the provincial government
as well as the mayors, municipal managers and their chief financial officers.
We want to commend all staff for their dedication, commitment and hard work. We
must continue to build on this solid foundation which has been laid in
KwaZulu-Natal. We must work hard towards ensuring that all provincial and local
government departments in KwaZulu-Natal receive financially unqualified (with
no matters) audit opinions,” said the Premier.
