Free State Social Development on school uniforms for poverty-stricken
families

Call for parents to apply for school uniforms

10 February 2009

The Department of Social Development in the Free State led by the Honourable
MEC Ouma Tsopo in partnership with the South African Social Security Agency
(SASSA) have been hard at work in implementing the adjusted allocation of R34,5
million meant for Social Relief of Distress (a programme that provides
temporary relief in the form of food parcels to families and individuals that
are hit hard by poverty). This programme which started in December 2008 and is
ending in March 2009 seeks to ensure that the dignity of the Free Staters is
restored by ensuring that families have food and that their children have
access to school uniforms.

The Motheo District Office started in December 2008 to identify children in
need of school uniforms and falling under the category of designated needy
persons who qualify to receive the Social Relief of Distress. The department is
humbly requesting parents to apply for school uniforms under the following
arrangements:

Parents must apply on behalf of the children that are in need of the school
uniforms and during the abovementioned dates, they will be assessed by the
social workers to determine that they are indeed meeting the criteria for
social relief of distress.

Parents are requested to bring along their identity documents and the birth
certificates of the children they are applying for. In addition, and very
important is that they must bring with them the correct sizes of shirts, pants,
skirts, jersey, underwear, shoes and socks.

The department is expecting parents that will be applying for the first time
and not the ones that applied during December 2008 as these are already
captured in the database of the department.

It is our hope and trust that this call will be heeded to as the department
urgently needs to complete this project whilst ensuring that the people receive
the services that are provided by government.
