The Minister of Social Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya has signed a
co-operation agreement with his counterpart, the Secretary for Social
Development in the Government of the United Mexican States, Ms Ana Orozco, in
Mexico City, today, 30 October 2006.
The bilateral agreement will formalise co-operation between the two
countries in the following areas:
(a) implementation and continuance of strategies to overcome poverty and
inequality
(b) implementation, monitoring and continuance and evaluation of programmes
with the aim of eradicating extreme poverty
(c) institutional organisation for the implementation of the strategy for
reducing poverty
(d) poverty and inequality measurement and indicators.
The two departments will develop action plans based on the national
priorities, to implement the agreement. Earlier, Dr Skweyiya attended the
annual meeting of the Inter-American Conference on Social Security. The
conference focused on, amongst other issues:
* the impact of Globalisation of Economic Activities on Social Security
Systems
* Globalisation and Social Security
* Preventive care for Older Adults
* Migration.
Dr Skweyiya is due back in South Africa on 01 November.
