Development Programme (MDP) for personnel
20 October 2006
The Minister of Correctional Services, Mr Ngconde Balfour is set to unveil a
comprehensive training programme for the department's middle management to
close the skills gaps that impact negatively on its ability to implement its
new strategic direction.
The unveiling of the Management Development Programme for correctional
officials will take place on 23 October 2006 at the Tshwane University of
Technology (TUT). The Minister will also be handing over certificates to over
220 middle managers that have completed their training during the piloting of
the customised training programme. The programme closes a gap left by the
introduction of a new curriculum for thousands of entry level officials and a
senior management service training implemented over the past few years.
The launch of the programme is a product of a partnership between the
Department of Correctional Services and the Tshwane University of
Technology.
This initiative is focused on cultivating skills and expertise required to
effectively and efficiently manage corrections institutions that are centred on
offender rehabilitation. The programme is integrated and accredited at National
Qualification Framework (NQF) levels 5 and 6. The modules of the programme were
quality assured and aligned to South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA)
requirements.
Joining Minister Balfour in gracing the event will be Deputy Minister of
Correctional Services, Ms Loretta Jacobus, the Rector of TUT Professor Errol
Tyobeka, Commissioner Linda Mti, senior management from Correctional Services
and other delegates.
