in the West Coast this week
24 July 2006
Transport and Public Works Minister Marius Fransman, departmental senior
management and staff in his office will embark on four Letsema Programmes in
the West Coast this week. Minister Fransman and his team will scrape walls,
doors and window frames, paint and replace broken windows in a disused police
station in Bitterfontein. This building will then be converted into a
government satellite office that will assist the thousands of Bitterfontein,
Rietpoort, Nuwerus, Kliprand and other surrounding areas to access government
services.
The team will also refurbish Kliprand Primary School, Bitterfontein Primary
School, Rietpoort Primary School and Nuwerus High School. Some of these schools
have not been maintained for more than five years. These Letsema Programmes,
which will run for three days starting on Thursday, will also create work
opportunities for local people in the District Management Area (DMA) which has
a 98 percent unemployment rate.
Representatives from the Departments of Labour, Agriculture, national
Department of Agriculture (NDA) and Independent Development Trust (IDT) will
also accompany Minister Fransman and will communicate to the local community on
projects and potential projects run by their departments in the DMA.
About a year ago Minister Fransman took senior management of the Department
of Housing and Local Government to build houses in Rietpoort, where houses have
not been built for more than four years. He then took the Western Province
Cricket Team to build houses in Site C, Khayelitsha, where people who have
never owned houses in their lives had access to government provided houses.
This Letsema Programme is another type of service delivery where senior
management officials, who usually spend their days in offices, roll up their
sleeves, put on overalls and work in communities to improve the living
conditions of poor people in different communities.
You are invited to join Minister Fransman on this programme that will assist
in improving the living condition of poor people of the West Coast and also
create jobs for the local unemployed people.
