KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Ina Cronjé, members of the KwaZulu-Natal
Legislature and officials of the Department of Education visited schools across
the province during the first three days after schools opened for the 2007
school year.
Twelve teams, consisting of members of the legislature and departmental
officials visited 108 schools, armed with checklists to monitor educator
attendance, learner attendance, delivery of learner support material, school
nutrition, start of lessons and the involvement of the school governing body,
as well as an analysis of the 2006 final examinations and community
involvement.
While the department is still analysing the provincial report the following
conclusions can be made:
* The large majority of schools began teaching and learning from day
one.
* More than 95% of schools visited had 100% deliveries in terms of core
stationery and textbooks. Of the 5%, some had outstanding textbook deliveries
in specific grades. It was found that some claiming not to have received orders
had not placed orders at all and others had submitted orders as late as
December 2006.
* The majority of educators reported to schools on the first day with isolated
cases where teachers were absent. Besides ill health a possible explanation for
some teacher absenteeism could have been that some teachers were writing
university examinations.
* The majority of the 108 schools visited, had provisional attendance
registers.
* A number of schools reported large numbers of orphans.
