Gauteng invites public to nominate public servants for Premier's Service
Excellence Awards

Public invited to choose best teams of civil servants

24 August 2006

The Gauteng Provincial Government invites members of the public to nominate
teams of civil servants that have served them with distinction to enter the
2006 Premier's Service Excellence Awards (PSEA).

The closing date for nomination is 31 August 2006 and the theme for this
year's awards is "Driving the Services Revolution to Build Gauteng as a Global
City Region”.

People can choose teams from institutions including hospitals, clinics and
schools that have shown innovation, creativity and excellence in serving the
public. Nomination forms are available at Gauteng provincial government
offices. Members of the public can phone the Gauteng call centre on 0860 428
8364 for more information or to make their nominations.

The PSEAs were introduced in 2002 to inspire, promote and reward excellent
performance in the public service. It forms part of a series of provincial
government measures to improve performance including better performance
management, monitoring and evaluation systems, service standards and the
promotion of the Batho Pele revitalisation campaign.

An independent panel of judges from civil society will assess the various
projects and interact with users of services as a further measure to ensure
that the public's views are heard.

Short listed teams compete for the bronze, silver and gold award for their
efforts. The best of the best teams are awarded the platinum trophy. The award
ceremony will be held on the evening of 24 November.

In the past, Leshata High School in Orange Farm, which achieved a 100
percent pass rate, won the platinum trophy. Other winners included the
Department of Health’s Botsalano Victim Friendly Service for care and support
of victims of sexual and physical abuse.

The PSEA encourage public servants to implement Batho Pele principles. The
principles seek to improve customer relations and service and they are:
consultation, service standards, access, courtesy, information, openness and
transparency, redress, giving best value, innovation and reward, customer
impact and leadership.

The awards will also help develop a professional public service corps and
promote government as a quality organisation that is continuously improving
itself to speed up service delivery and improve the lives of the people of
Gauteng.
