Awards
9 September 2006
Five years ago, the Southern African Institute of Government Auditors
(SAIGA) introduced important awards in the public sector to recognise the
pursuit of excellence in annual reports published by provincial and national
departments.
The Awards are called the SAIGA Annual Public Sector Reporting Awards.
The Awards for Pursuit of Excellence in Departmental Annual Reports are a
significant initiative and must be seen against the background of the
promulgation of the Public Finance Management Actand related legislation such
as the Treasury Regulations.
To ensure total independence from the executive and the finance departments,
the awards are managed and administered by the Southern African Institute of
Government Auditors (SAIGA) with the support and co-operation of the
Accountant-General as well as the Auditor-General.
The award panel and the Technical Award Committee is constituted from
experts in the field of public sector reporting, representatives of the Office
of the Accountant-General, the Office of the Auditor-General, academia and
SAIGA.
The project produces twelve awards:
* one for the best report of a national department
* one for the best provincial department (for each of the nine provinces)
* one for the most consistent highest score over the last five years
* a twelfth award is made for the department obtaining the overall highest
score.
