Education to host Associated Schools Project Network Friendship
Encounter, 10 to 12 Aug

Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet) Friendship
Encounter moves to KwaZulu-Natal

9 August 2007

The National Department of Education will on Friday to Saturday, 10 to 12
August 2007, host ASPnet Friendship Encounter at Lugobe High School in
Umbumbulu, Kwa-Zulu Natal Province.

The overarching objectives of the project are to:

* celebrate the international decade of a culture of peace and non-violence
for children of the world, as a follow up to the international Friendship
Encounter
* support the cultural exchange between schools, and to encourage similar
interactions between South African schools and other schools regionally and
internationally
* provide young people with an opportunity to reflect on and discuss issues
related to the four ASPnet study themes, which are, the world concerns and the
United Nations System, human rights and democracy, intercultural learning and
environmental protection.

The programme of the ASPnet event will be characterised by gender workshop,
as part of the National Women's Day celebrations due to take place on 9 August.
Indigenous games and non-competitive sports aimed at celebrating the
International Youth Day of the United Nations (UN).

The activities will culminate into an award ceremony in which each of the
participating schools will receive trophy for team spirit and fair play.

Similar events have already been organised previously by the department's
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco)
Directorate at Nyala Game Reserve in Brits, North West, which involved 78
learners from 20 ASPnet and non-ASPnet schools throughout the country.

The other event which saw six South African learners participating in the
international Friendship Encounter took place in Dinard and Saint Malo in
France. It was co-organised by Unesco Headquarters, the French National
Commission for Unesco and the French Ministry of Sport.

The ASPnet seeks to improve quality in education and promote values of
intercultural understanding, gender equity, human rights and education for
sustainable development.

KwaZulu-Natal's Zwelibanzi, Amahlubi and Lugobe High Schools together with
Chinhoyi High School from Zimbabwe will be participating.
