Horse owners are alerted to the fact that the African horse sickness (AHS)
season has started. A few reports of AHS were received and the diagnosis is
being confirmed by laboratory tests. Horse owners are urged to ensure that
their horses are vaccinated annually as prescribed by the Animal Diseases Act
(Act 35 of 1984 ) and that all suspected AHS cases are reported to their
nearest State Veterinarian.
Although two of the reported AHS cases occurred in the Western Cape province
they are in Knysna which is approximately 150 kilometres away from the AHS
control zone. South Africa's export status for horses will thus not be affected
negatively in any way. Exports to the European Union were reopened on 25
October 2006 and are continuing unhindered.
The public is requested to adhere to the movement control measures designed
to protect the disease free status of the AHS free zone. Owners moving horses
to the Western Cape are requested to contact their local State Veterinarian for
details. Alternatively, the State Veterinarian Boland at (021) 808 5253.
