Labour on bargaining council dispute

Labour Ministry welcomes court ruling on bargain council
dispute

1 September 2006

The Ministry of Labour has welcomed the Labour courts dismissal of an
application by the Newcastle Chinese Chamber of Commerce challenging the
decision by the Minister in 2003, to extend a collective agreement of the
National Bargaining Council (NBC) for the clothing manufacturing industry.

The applicants wanted the court to review and set aside the Ministers
extension of the agreement for non-metro areas, to bind on other employers and
employees in the industry, for a period between July 2003 and June 2005. On
Thursday, however, the court dismissed the case when attorneys of the
applicants filed a notice of withdrawal, citing the absence of their client.
Welcoming the courts decision, the Ministry said that the conclusion of the
case would allow the department to continue with its normal daily operations,
without any distractions.
