Candidates contesting Municipal By-elections on 8 November 2023

Six (6) municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Western Cape provinces on Wednesday, 8 November 2023.

The by-elections will be contested by 25 candidates from 11 political parties.

In Gauteng 

  • Ward 47 in the City of Tshwane Municipality - TSH, will be contested by four (4) Candidates: 1.  Alfonzo Deveaux Jacobs of the African National Congress (ANC); 2. Anna Alida Erasmus of the Democratic Alliance(DA); 3. Eon de Koker of the Republican Conference of Tshwane (RC); and 4. Margaux Overbeek of The Organic Humanity Movement (OHM). 

The ward was previously represented by the DA and become vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout of this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 62,92%. 

  • Ward 64 in the City of Tshwane Municipality – TSH, will be contested by six (6) candidates: 1. Henriette Louise Fröhlich of the ActionSA; 2. Thabang Moshidi of the African Christian Democracy Party (ACDP); 3. Makanyane Passier Mothupi of the ANC, 4. Issabel Alta De Kock of the DA; 5. Sabrina Maharaj of the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) and 6. Alexander Johannes Koekemoer of the RC. 

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 58,32%.

In Limpopo

  • Ward 01 in the Ephraim Mogale Municipality – LIM471, will be contested by three (3) candidates, 1. Solly Solomon Rabalago of the ANC; 2. Mmakoloi Constance Makola of the Bolsheviks Party of South Africa and (3) Lazarus Ramokgano Legoathi of the EFF.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 43,21%.

In Mpumalanga

Ward 09 in the Msukaligwa Municipality – MP302, will be contested by two (2) candidates: 1. Khandizwe Johannes Makhubu of the ANC; and 2. Thulisile Nkosi of the EFF. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s death. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 37,81%.

  • Ward 21 in the Govan Mbeki Municipality – MP307, will be contested by three (3) candidates: 1. Mary-Jane Sibongile Zwane of the ANC; 2. Fiona Hope Niekerk Pelman of the DA; and 3. John Nqabusile Ndeni of the EFF. 

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was 50,74%.

In Western Cape

  • Ward 07 in the Swartland Municipality – WC015, will be contested by seven (7) candidates:1. Lesley Danovan Esau of the ACDP; 2. Thembalethu Given Nongogo of the ANC; 3. Allan Mark Williams of the DA; 4. Miriam Hugo of the EFF; 5. Rodney Waren Esau of the Patriotic Alliance (PA); 6. Marlon Lindsay Truter of the United Independent Movement; and 7. Amber Maria Booysen of the Vryheidsfront Plus.

The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the councillor’s resignation. The voter turnout for this ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections 49,05%.
