208 of 1993

The Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Amendment Act 208 of 1993 intends:

to amend the Occupational Diseases in Mines and Works Act, 1973, so as
to do away with all provisions which differentiate between persons on the ground of their sex or population group;
to define or further define certain expressions;
to empower the director to authorize owners of mines and works to issue certificates of fitness on his behalf and subject to his directions;
to do away with the office of medical adviser;
to regulate differently the expression of a risk;
to make the possession of a certificate of fitness by all persons performing risk work in controlled mines and works compulsory;
to regulate differently the issuing of certificates of fitness;
to repeal provisions which seek to preclude the jurisdiction of the courts;
to further regulate the certification of compensatable diseases;
to increase the number of members of the advisory committee;
to change the basis on which interest on amounts indebted to the commissioner is levied;
to provide for the actuarial valuation of the fund;
to change the basis on which benefits are calculated;
to do away with assistance in connection with training;
to empower the Minister to amend the Act so as to increase benefits; and
to extend the Minister's powers to make regulations; and
to provide for matters connected therewith.
