President Jacob Zuma launches Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, 14 Apr

President Jacob Zuma will tomorrow, 14 April 2015, launch the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Garankuwa, Pretoria.

Government has separated the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) and the University of Limpopo and the standalone MEDUNSA campus in Garankuwa has become the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

The new university will continue to train medical and allied health sciences professionals, but will also introduce new academic offerings ranging from biomedical technology to bioengineering.

This milestone accentuates the government’s commitments to expand capacity to train enough doctors to meet the country’s pressing healthcare needs.

Last year, two new universities were established in Mpumalanga and Northern Cape provinces respectively, namely the University of Mpumalanga and Sol Plaatje University, as part of the country’s massive education infrastructure development drive and in order to expand access to higher education for all citizens.
