Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi leads Africa Day celebrations, 23 May

Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi to lead Africa Day celebrations in Maluleke Village

Arts and Culture Deputy Minister, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, MP, will deliver a keynote address at the Africa Day Celebration in Makuleke village on Saturday, 23 May 2015, at the Makuleke ground in Malamulele, Limpopo.

Africa Day is celebrated annually within the African continent to mark the formation of thse Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963 and the African Union in 2002 and the progress made by the continent since then to advance democracy, peace, stability and socio-economic development.

South Africa rejoined the continent and the international community in 1994 following the dawn of freedom and democracy. Africa Day 2015 will therefore mark the celebration of 21 years since the country's reintegration into the OAU/AU and the international community.

This year we celebrate Africa Day under the theme: We are Africa; Opening the doors of learning and culture to promote peace and friendship from Cape to Cairo. This is a call to all of us to mobilize each and every sector of the society to work toward uniting our motherland continent of Africa.

The celebration of Africa Day in Makuleke was funded by the Department of Arts and Culture through the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE). This funding followed the request of Chief Makuleke who approached the department of Arts and Culture and requested partnership in celebration of Africa day. This MGE approach seeks to reposition the arts, culture and heritage sector as the key players in government’s programme of action towards creation of sustainable jobs, audience and skills development, social and economic development of the sector.

Prior to the launch, the Deputy Minister will hoist both the African Union flag and South African flag and also sing both the African Union anthem and South African anthem at the Makuleke Primary School.

The department encourages all sectors of society to join the Africa Month celebrations. Full programme for the month is available on www.dac.gov.za.
