The Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mrs Pamela Tshwete, together with Vhembe District Executive Mayor, Thulamela Local Municipality Mayor, and Xikundu traditional leaders, will on Wednesday, 13 May 2015 engage the residents of Malamulele on the Luvuvhu Adopt-a-River project at Magomani Sports Ground, Magomani Village.
Adopt-a-River project is part of the Department of Water and Sanitation’s River Health Programme (RHP). The programme is aimed at increasing awareness of the importance of South Africa’s water resources, as well as to promote community participation in taking care of the country’s water resources. The initiative also aims to piece together, in a sustainable manner, the aims of aquatic ecosystem health, economic growth and human health, as well as co-dependent land and water-use principles.
A total of 1 460 Malamulele residents, with the majority of them being women, have volunteered to clean the Luvuvhu River with an aim of rendering the water from the sources for all uses at minimal cost. During this event, the Deputy Minister will work together with the volunteers, residents and the mayors to clean the Luvuvhu River and its tributaries. Luvuvhu River is also a source of water for Xikundu Water Purification Plant and flows for about 200km through a diverse range of landscape before it joins the Limpopo River.
