Students to inform the Deputy Minister's Budget Vote debate speech
The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana, MP, will host four (4) students from institutions of Higher Learning, namely, the University of Cape Town, the University of Western Cape, Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Northlink TVET College for a breakfast session in a bid to inform and finalize his speech for the Higher Education and Training Budget Vote Debate to be held in the National Assembly on Wednesday, 13 May 2015.
The students who will be joining the Deputy Minister have been drawn from institutions of Higher Learning in the Western Cape and they are all current recipients/beneficiaries of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
The Breakfast Session will create a platform of engagement between the Deputy Minister and the students to shape the trajectory of the speech to be tabled by the Deputy Minister. Students remain a crucial voice of opinion within the public discourse, and it can only be fair to afford them an opportunity to state what they feel should be the priorities of the Ministry and Department of Higher Education and Training for the next year.
The Deputy Minister will allow the students to share their insight that seek to address the challenges face by the Post School Education System as well as their positive experiences in the sector. The Deputy Minister will then share with the students the strides that government has made in reshaping the Post School Education and Training Sector, this will include amongst other:
- The establishment of the Department in 2009
- The increase in NSFAS Allocation over the years
- The increase in student intake in both Universities and colleges
- The construction of three new universities
The breakfast session will be held in the morning of the 13th May 2015 in the Deputy Minister’s Office in Cape Town.
