Re-building, re-setting, re-newing: the prospects for economic growth and job creation post civil unrest
The recent riots and looting wreaked havoc on many businesses, destroying lives and livelihoods in the process.
But out of every crisis comes an opportunity and South Africans, as always, rose to the occasion in the aftermath of the devastation. People came together to clean up, repair, and restore as much as possible. Businesses that themselves lost millions of Rands of stock and infrastructure pitched in and donated money and products towards communities that had been worst affected.
Now, as we look ahead to find a long term, sustained solution for growth and job creation to put our country back on the path of economic recovery, Proudly South African is holding a dialogue to look at the economic landscape in the wake of the civil unrest.
Join Dr Mike Nkuna, founder and chairperson of the Masingita Group, owners of 15 shopping malls around the country including Jabulani, Protea Glen and Bara in Soweto, all of which were affected by the looting.
Dr Nkuna will be joined by Philippa Rodseth of the Manufacturing Circle and Kgomotso Motshegoa, founder of restaurant Corner Dladla, along with Proudly SA CEO, Eustace Mashimbye.
Said Proudly SA CEO, Eustace Mashimbye, “As an organisation committed to working to alleviate the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and especially unemployment, Proudly South African came out strongly against the destruction of jobs. But this is not enough and through this webinar we are actively looking for ways in which we can assist our members, and the country, to recover from social and economic challenges.”
He added, “We are honoured that Dr Nkuna is taking time out of what is always a busy schedule, but which is more so now than before the riots, to join is in this discussion. Dr Nkuna’s company employs around 12 000 people and the retailers in his malls considerably more, so he has a very particular perspective that he will bring to the table.”
