MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi launches 2021 Provincial Tourism Month Programme, 01 Sept

MEC Mosenogi to launch 2021 provincial tourism month programme

September is almost here again. The month is celebrated by the Tourism Industry as Tourism Month globally.  Equally, September is celebrated as Heritage Month.  The MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Kenetswe Mosenogi will be launching the Provincial 2021 Tourism Month, under the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) theme “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”. The launch takes place at on the 1st September 2021, Wentzel Dam, in Schweizer Reneke, 10h00.

This will be done in conjunction with the departmental agencies, North West Tourism Board (NWTB) and North West Parks Board (NWPB), in partnership with the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District and the Mamusa Local municipalities.

The choice to host the event in Schweizer Reneke is based on the theme “Tourism for Inclusive Growth”, whereby the inclusivity of Villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD) is strategically important. Thereby, Wentzel Dam as a key attraction in this small town, gets to be exposed and marketed as an adventure tourist attraction, with a water body that accommodates angling and a number of water sports, such as water rafting, boat cruising, kayaking, canoeing to name just a few.

The occasion will be used to advocate for COVID 19 Vaccination, thus amplifying on government’s campaign to encourage citizens to vaccinate, although targeting the tourism and hospitality sector/players.  “We saw it fit to partner with the Department of Health in this initiative towards achieving the provincial target of vaccinating 2.1 million population by February 2022. These we do mainly because tourism industry is one of the hardest hit sectors of the economy.  This scenario, necessitates a call to action on our part to assist travel and tourism to take place within the confines of the COVID 19 Pandemic protocols”, said Mosenogi.

The Tourism month allows for a heightened focus on the importance of tourism to the local economy, and serves as an opportunity to promote domestic tourism.  It highlights tourist attractions, showcase tourism products and create a culture of travel amongst South Africans.

The Launch will also be used to share the provincial Tourism Month programme with media, whose partnership is very important to assist government by informing and educating the public on mandates, programmes and activities relating to tourism.

Members of the media are invited.
