7 December 2006
Tshwane: Minister Radebe and MECs for Transport today met with the National
Taxi Alliance to continue discussions on the grievances raised by the latter in
the meeting of 10 November 2006. The main issue that NTA raised was the
official recognition of their structure as captured in their memorandum of
grievances.
Minister Radebe expressed Government's commitment to continue to engage with
all taxi operators, including NTA, in order to strive for unity and
transformation of the industry to intensify the implementation of the Taxi
Recapitalisation Programme (TRP) as well as the empowerment of the entire taxi
industry.
After careful consideration of the demand by the NTA to be given the same
status as the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), Government has
taken a decision not to accede to that demand. Government cannot deviate from
its decision to have one umbrella body, SANTACO. It should be noted that NTA
participated in the formation of SANTACO in 2001.
Government remains committed in the implementation of the TRP for the
benefit of commuters, drivers and operators.
