Fact sheet
Youth version of the South African Environment Outlook (YSAEO)
Description
A South African environmental report for the youth
Overview
Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Rejoice Mabudafhasi and
the Chairperson of the National Youth Commission will launch the Youth Version
of the South African State of Environment Outlook.
History
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the Africa
Environment Outlook (AEO) for Youth, a state of the environment report for the
Africa region, in 2003. This process follows the development of a Global
Environmental Outlook for Youth report, which also led to the development of
country specific reports on environment for youth.
The development of a youth version of the state of the environmental report
for South Africa was the next logic step. Last year a consultative process
between youth countrywide unfolded in a form a national workshop, where young
people met in a participatory process looking at environmental assessment and
decision making. Their involvement in YSAEO stimulated environmental debate,
and provided an opportunity for youth action on relevant environmental
issues.
The production of this report is in line with Principle 4(q) of the National
Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998), which states that "The vital
role of women and youth in environmental management and development must be
recognised and their full participation therein must be promoted".
Objective
This initiative was geared towards mobilising the South African Youth to
understanding the human health and well-being dimensions of the environment; to
increase the accessibility of environmental information to the youth; to
increase environmental awareness amongst South African youth.
