Public Protector to launch mobile office, 2 Oct

Mobile Office of the Public Protector Launch

26 September 2007

The Public Protector Advocate, Mabedle Lawrence Mushwana will, together with
Eastern Cape Premier, Nosimo Balindlela and Chairperson of the National Council
of Provinces, Chairman Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, launch a pilot project of the
Mobile Office of the Public Protector (MOPP). Other Chapter 9 institutions such
as the Commission on Gender Equality will participate in the project.

The mobile office pilot project is a means of bringing the services of the
Public Protector closer to the people, especially those in far-flung areas of
the country. With more funding, the project hopes to go to every rural area in
the country, bringing the services of the Public Protector to the masses.

The launch will take place at Lusikisiki College of Education in Lusikisiki
on Tuesday, 2 October 2007.

The Public Protector's office is established in terms of Chapter 9 of the
Constitution of South Africa. It strengthens our young constitutional democracy
through, among others, investigating maladministration, delays in service
delivery, and allegations of impropriety or prejudice by public administration
in any sphere of government.

It is an office of last resort, meaning that all other avenues to address a
complaint must be exhausted before the Public Protector is approached. It does
not investigate court decisions and its services are free.

The event will take place as follows:
