The Presidency on Business Day editorial

Response to Business Day editorial

23 October 2007

On Monday, 16 October 2007, the Business Day published an editorial claiming
that President Thabo Mbeki had 'approved' the arrest of Sunday Times editor, Mr
Mondli Makhanya.

Presidential Spokesperson, Mukoni Ratshitanga, approached Business Day
editor, Mr Peter Bruce, to negotiate a response to the editorial. Mr Bruce
suggested that Mr Ratshitanga submit a 400-word letter. The paper does not
allow responses to the views and opinions expressed in its pages except through
letters, which the latter did.

In the interest of democratic, free, open and critical exchange of ideas, we
provide the editorial, the original response and the published version on the
website of The Presidency, http://www.thepresidency.gov.za, and
invite all South Africans to engage with the debate.
