Witness Protection Unit under investigation

The State President has issued a proclamation authorising an investigation
into the affairs of the Witness Protection Unit (WPU). The investigation was
initiated by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

The investigation will be conducted by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).
The investigation will look into among other things, whether or not:

* there is mismanagement of resources by staff members of the WPU
* there is Public Finance Management Act compliance in the unit
* there is compliance with other requirements of the Witness Protection
Act.

In keeping with this investigation, the NPA has consequently asked the Head
of WPU, Dawood Adam to take special leave immediately. The head of Operations
in the said unit, Ronnie Borcherds has been suspended forthwith.

Advocate John Welch will take over as the Acting Head of WPU until further
notice.
