6 March 2009
Minister for Safety and Security, Nathi Mthethwa, and the French Ambassador,
Denis Pietton, will sign a co-operation agreement. The agreement will amongst
other things strengthen the capacity of the South African Police Service (SAPS)
in the fight against transnational organised crime and terrorism. French police
and gendarmerie services have vast experience in this field which South Africa
will be able to tap into.
The three year co-operation agreement will encompass a substantial financial
commitment of 1 260 000⬠(more than R15 million Rand) to the SAPS.
Objectives of the co-operation project include:
* the reinforcement of the South African Police Services capacity to respond
to terrorist threats and to address international criminal networks
* the reinforcement of South African borders
* the enhancement of specialised detective and investigative departments
* the continued development of forensics sciences.
This once again underscores the efforts of the South African government to
utilise all resources and support available for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup,
and beyond.
Media is cordially invited to cover the signing of the agreement.
