Makwetla to handover a house, wheelchairs and blankets
The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services,Thabang Makwetla, will on Tuesday (Tomorrrow), 26 September 2017 handover a house refurbished by Inmates and parolees under the Johannesburg Correctional Centre, popularly known as 'Sun City'. The house is located in Moletsane, Soweto. This property belongs to an indigent family of Ms Diratile and was flatly damaged and gutted by fire from faulty electrical connections.
A total of 7 inmates, as part of their rehabilitation and community outreach programme, were assigned the task of refurbishing the house using the skills imparted to them by Correctional Services.
Using material donated by the private sector and labour deployed by Correctional Services, the house was rebuilt, renovated and painted over a month and is now ready for occupation. Upon conclusion of the morning ceremony, Deputy Minister Makwetla will further proceed to a ceremony to donate 30 wheelchairs at an event to be held in Pimville, Soweto. The wheelchairs were assembled by Inmates and parolees.
The wheelchairs will be donated to selected families and individuals living with disabilities in areas covering Mofolo, Dlamini and Diepkloof. All beneficiaries and nearby communities are expected to attend the event.
DCS, working in collaboration with local ward councillors and community structures, identified and selected 10 women from the Diepkloof Methodist Church, 10 women from the Soweto Self Help Paraplegic Association (SHAP) in Mofolo and additional 10 women for Isizinda Sempilo based in Dlamini.
In addition, a total of 30 blankets donated by Correctional Officials from 'Sun City' will be given to the same beneficiaries whom the majority are senior citizens aged above 70years. Johannesburg Correctional Centre houses more than 10 000 inmates and supervises more than 2300 parolees in and around Soweto.
Through on-going programmes to train inmates in various skills, DCS places emphasis on restoration and rehabilation for inmates so they may not resort back to crime upon reintegration back to their families and society.
The above events showcase some of the successes of this interventions.
