Defence hosts Freedom of Entry Parade in Cape Town, 23 Sept

South African National Defence Force Freedom of Entry Parade into the city of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town which is endearingly dubbed the Mother City, will be hosting the Freedom of the City Entry for 11 Units across all Services and Divisions of the South African National Defence Force. During this momentous event, these Units will be 
conferred with the right of entry into the City.

The City of Cape Town which has a coastline of 294km, is a Category A municipality and it is conveniently nestled in the Southern Peninsula of the Western Cape Province. It stretches from Gordon’s Bay to Atlantis and it includes the suburb urban areas of 
Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.

The Freedom of Entry parade into the city is scheduled to take place on Saturday the 23rdof September 2023 and the format configuration thereof was authorized by the Commander of the South African Armed Forces General Rhudzani Maphwanya. The 
Commander of the South African Landward Forces (SA Army) Lieutenant General Lawrence Khulekani Mbatha is entrusted with a mammoth responsibility of being a level 2 Chief Executor during this momentous occasion.

Freedom of the entry is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies wherein an honour is bestowed by a municipality upon a military unit, as a valued member of the community or a visiting celebrity or dignitary. 

The South African will be conferred with the Freedom of entry include 10 Anti-Aircraft, Cape Town Highlanders, Cape Town Rifles (CLR), Nelson Mandela Artillery Regiment and AAAR, which was previously known as Cape Garrison Artillery.

The Freedom of Entry into the City parade is scheduled to take place on Saturday 23 September 2023 at 11: 00 am in front of the iconic Cape Town City Hall on Darling Street. 

It will be graced by the presence of the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, Chiefs of other services, the Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Geordin Hill Lewis and other prominent figures. The Executive Mayor 
Geordin Hill Lewis will be the main functionary during this auspicious event.
